"Please Like Me" - TV Show About Mental Illness
I found this just when browsing the news, but it's a relatively new show.. only a few years old. The theme of mental illness isn't extremely prevalent, however the protagonist struggled with suicidal thoughts (eventually leading to his failed suicide attempt) and it's just about him going through the challenges that come with being a recently-out, young adult. This show incorporates mental illness with much lighter, gentler vibes than books like "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Girl, Interrupted." It's refreshing to see mental illness not always associated with darker, grungier vibes.

I agree with you in saying that it is refreshing to see mental illness not being associated with dark and negative vibes. This show seems like it is definitely capturing mental illness in a whole new light. I really like how when they talk about the show they say, "It's really hard. When you're representing mental illness, you want it to be honest. But it's really varied," Also, they say "rather than present facile narratives of loving family members and strong personal relationships healing all wounds, Please Like Me understands that living with mental illness is a recurring battle, one that requires self-care and professional help as well as a strong support network," which shows that they understand that representing mental illness in a new, not negative way is crucial.
